The latest data from the Financial Services Council (FSC) highlights the important role life insurance continues to play for many New Zealand households.
As at 31 March 2026, the industry reported approximately 4 million life insurance covers across New Zealand, with annual premiums totalling $3.31 billion.
While insurance is often something people hope they never need to use, it is designed to provide financial support when life takes an unexpected turn, whether through illness, injury, disability, loss of income, or death.

Protection against life’s biggest financial shocks
Life insurance policies can cover a range of risks, depending on the type of cover held.
The FSC data shows that term life and accidental death cover remain the largest segment of the market, accounting for $1.64 billion in annual premium income. Trauma insurance generated $672 million in annual premiums, while income protection accounted for $539 million.
These products are designed to help people manage events that can have a significant impact on their finances and their families.
For many households, personal insurance forms part of a broader financial safety net alongside savings, investments, and other assets.
Balancing protection and affordability
The latest figures also highlight an ongoing challenge facing many households: balancing the need for financial protection with everyday budget pressures.
As living costs continue to affect household finances, some people may review their insurance arrangements to ensure their cover remains affordable and aligned with their needs.
However, insurance decisions are not always straightforward. Changes to cover can affect the level of protection available if a claim is needed in the future.
The value of reviewing cover
Life circumstances rarely stay the same.
Changes in income, debt levels, family responsibilities, employment, or health can all influence the type and amount of cover that may be appropriate over time.
Regularly reviewing insurance arrangements can help ensure cover continues to reflect current circumstances and financial priorities.
A review may also identify opportunities to adjust benefits or policy features while maintaining important protection.
Understanding what cover is designed to do
Insurance is ultimately about helping manage financial risk.
While no policy can prevent an illness, injury, or unexpected life event from occurring, insurance may help reduce the financial impact when these situations arise.
The latest FSC data serves as a reminder that life insurance continues to play an important role in helping many New Zealanders protect themselves and their families against some of life’s biggest uncertainties.
