Health Insurance

If you need surgery or treatment and want to avoid delays in the public system

While we are lucky to have a public health care system here in NZ, getting help through the public system can sometimes mean long wait times and restrictions around where/how you get the care you need. This could lead to your health getting worse, or a longer recovery time.

Having health insurance means you can skip the queue, accessing the treatment you need quickly and helping you get the best care possible.

It gives you more control over the care you receive and covers most major costs such as surgeries and hospital stays. Health insurance also comes with optional extras that you can choose from, such as specialist visits or diagnostic tests. Have a chat to one of our advisers if you want to find out what cover would be best for you.

Doesn’t ACC cover me for that?

ACC only provides cover for injuries that meet specific criteria. In general terms, only injuries caused by an accident are covered. This means there are a lot of conditions that are not covered by ACC, meaning you would need to use the public health care system or pay for the costs yourself.

When should I get health insurance?

We generally recommend you take out health insurance as soon as you can, while you are young and healthy. Taking out health insurance when you are healthy means your policy will cover the most conditions possible. If you wait too long to take out health insurance, you may develop pre-existing conditions that will likely not be covered under your policy.

Making a claim

To make a claim, you will need to complete a claim form and send it to your insurer along with any supporting evidence (such as medical reports or x-rays). This is something your financial adviser will help you with.

We generally recommend you apply for pre-approval for health insurance claims, meaning you know that your claim will be paid before you get treated. Some insurers can pay healthcare providers directly. Otherwise, you may need to pay the cost yourself then seek reimbursement from your insurer.
